A model for discharge in spring-dominated streams and implications for the transmissivity and recharge of quaternary volcanics in the Oregon Cascades

چکیده
A model for discharge in spring-fed streams is described and applied to streams in the Oregon Cascades. These streams are assumed to be fed by an unconfined aquifer composed predominantly of quaternary basalts and basaltic andesites. The model is based on the unsteady Boussinesq equation and is characterized by a single parameter, a normalized length scale of the aquifer. Flow in a runoff-dominated stream is used as a proxy for the time-dependent groundwater recharge. Four spring-dominated streams with 50 years of daily discharge records are studied, and modeling efficiencies are in the range of 0.76-0.89. The effective transmissivity is found to be approximately proportional to the length scale of the aquifers. Groundwater echarge rates are in the range of 66-127 cm/yr and 40-73% of the mean annual precipitation.

Hydrology of spring-dominated streams in the Oregon Cascades
Spring-dominated streams in the Oregon Cascades are often characterized by nearly constant discharge and by peak flows that occur in late summer or fall, several months after the annual snowmelt. A model is presented that can account for the temporal variations of discharge and the delay between snowmelt and the period of peak streamflow. Springs are assumed to be fed by an unconfined aquifer t...
متن کاملInfluence of volcanic history on groundwater patterns on the west slope of the Oregon High Cascades
[1] Spring systems on the west slope of the Oregon High Cascades exhibit complex relationships among modern topography, lava flow geometries, and groundwater flow patterns. Seven cold springs were continuously monitored for discharge and temperature in the 2004 water year, and they were periodically sampled for dO, dD, tritium, and dissolved noble gases. Anomalously high unit discharges suggest...

In the southeast of bam, there is a collection of volcanic rocks with andesite, basalt and trachy andesite composition. The texture of these rocks are often porphyritic with microlithic, porphyric cavity, and sometimes glomerulophorphuri, sore throat trachytic. Main minerals include Olivine, Clinopyroxene, Plagioclase and secondary minerals including opaque minerals, Iodenzyte, secondary Biotit...
متن کاملMODELING OF GROUNDWATER FLOW OVER SLOPING BEDS IN RESPONSE TO CONSTANT RECHARGE AND STREAM OF VARYING WATER LEVEL
This paper presents an analytical model characterizing unsteady groundwater flow in an unconfined aquifer resting on a sloping impervious bed. The aquifer is in contact with a constant water level at one end. The other end is connected to a stream whose level is increasing form an initial level to a final level at a known exponentially decaying function of time. Moreover, the aquifer is repleni...
متن کاملAlluvial fan facies of the Qazvin Plain: paleoclimate and tectonic implications during Quaternary
The present research focuses on a detailed facies description and interpretation of five alluvial fans of the Qazvin Plain. Beside the tectonic activity that leads to the localization of the fans on the northern margin of the Qazvin Plain, the climate has a significant role in the occurrence of their facies. The alluvial fans are divided into three facies groups: group 1, group 2, and group 3. ...
